Why Infield Software?

I've always been a big baseball fan. Some of my favorite players over the years have been those who didn't seem like the most obvious person to be an elite athlete. I'm thinking of Red Sox greats like Tim Wakefield, who made a 19 year, 200 win career out of his knuckleball. Dustin Pedroia spent his career defying the scouts that wrote him off as too small to be a major league second baseman. They weren't a clear choice at first glance, but when the game was on the line, they came through. Beyond the stars stretching their physical talents, I look at the careers of utility infielders; always ready to play a different position when the team needs them. It is rare for one of those players to make an All-Star team or win any MVP awards, but a good one is worth about as much.

I look back on my own career so far in much the same way, having played almost every software engineering role there is from technical lead on minimum viable products, to leading application frameworks development, technology recruiting strategy, to people and process management. I spent years moving between teams as needed, trying to add the most value I could in what I usually knew was a temporary role. I've embraced the role of utility infielder throughout my career. It's given me a breadth of expereince I couldn't have expected with a more defined path. In the same vein, I look forward to helping teams of all sizes work through their challenges in whatever roles create the most value.
